Commercial programs weight loss more effective than official

Although it seems hard to believe, commercial programs designed to lose weight are more effective and cheaper than those designed for primary care services in the British Isles, led by specially trained staff, according to a study published in British Medical Journal .

Nearly a quarter of the population of England are classified as obese. There is evidence that commercial programs weight control can be effective, but the effectiveness of obesity management in primary care remains to be determined.

So researchers at the University of Birmingham decided to compare the effectiveness of several commercial programs weight loss that lasted for 12 weeks with those used in primary care.

In total, 740 obese and overweight. Finally, follow-up data were obtained from 658 participants (89%) at the end of 12 weeks and 522 (71%) per year.
The programs included in the analysis based systems including dietary, medical or pharmaceutical orientation (Weight Watchers, Slimming World, Rosemary Conley). The control group was provided with 12 vouchers for free admission to a fitness center.
12 weeks / 1 year
All programs achieved significant weight loss after after 12 weeks from the 4.4 kg (Weight Watchers) to 1.4 kg (medical advice). The primary-care programs scored higher than the control group at 12 weeks.

In one year, weight loss was statistically significant for all groups, however, the method Weight Watchers was the only one who achieved a significantly greater weight loss than the control group.

The study author Paul Aveyard, notes that patients referred to Weight Watchers were those who held the greatest reduction in body mass index. In addition, at the end of the thinning process of 12 weeks, these patients' were the most weight lost half, reaching 4.43 kilos "he reiterates. Aveyard says his study "presents a real and viable solution to obesity."
